Hemorrhoids Q & A

What causes hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are small clusters or bulges of veins that develop right underneath the mucous membranes that line your lower bowels. Nicknamed “piles,” hemorrhoids can develop inside your rectum, or they can form on your anus and become external.

Hemorrhoids form when you have increased pressure in your lower rectum. This could be due to:

  • Being overweight or obese
  • Participating in anal intercourse
  • Following a poor diet with little fiber intakes
  • Struggling with chronic constipation or diarrhea

Although anyone of any age can develop hemorrhoids, they’re most common among pregnant women and older adults.

When should I see a doctor for hemorrhoids?

Not only can hemorrhoids cause discomfort, if left untreated, but they can also become strangulated or form a clot (thrombosed hemorrhoid), both of which are seriously painful issues. You’re encouraged to come in to the office of Jules Garbus MD PC if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Rectal bleeding
  • Anal itching
  • Swelling or tenderness around your anus

No matter how minor or how severe your hemorrhoids may be, Dr. Garbus can help. He performs a digital exam and visual inspection and runs any necessary labs, so he can talk with you about your diagnosis and which treatments may be most effective for your needs.

How are hemorrhoids treated?

Treating hemorrhoids often involves combining medical intervention and lifestyle changes. Dr. Garbus creates a personalized hemorrhoid treatment plan based on your diagnosis. Your hemorrhoid treatment plan may include:

  • Increasing your fiber intake
  • Managing your weight
  • Using over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams

If conservative treatments aren’t effective for you, Dr. Garbus could recommend a hemorrhoid procedure to shrink your hemorrhoids. He may recommend any of the following minimally invasive in-office solutions:

  • Rubber band ligation
  • Sclerotherapy (injection therapy)
  • Laser coagulation

For more severe hemorrhoids and related symptoms, Dr. Garbus could recommend hemorrhoid removal (hemorrhoidectomy) or hemorrhoid stapling. These types of surgeries are only necessary for a small percentage of patients.
