Colorectal Surgery Q & A

Why do I need colorectal surgery?

Colorectal surgery is generally reserved for treating severe conditions that won’t respond to conservative treatments or for gathering biopsies of tissues for diagnostic purposes. You may need colorectal surgery if you have any of the following bowel conditions:

  • Fecal incontinence
  • Rectal prolapse
  • Colon cancer
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Diverticulitis
  • Blockage
  • Proctitis
  • Polyps
  • Fistula
  • Fissure

If you have a severe bowel disorder, you may need a colostomy, which involves changing how waste exits your body by creating a new opening in your abdominal wall.

How long is the recovery after colorectal surgery?

The office of Jules Garbus MD PC proudly provides comprehensive preoperative and postoperative care, so you have a dedicated medical professional to turn to throughout every stage of your surgical process.

Depending on your specific colorectal procedure, Dr. Garbus may have you stay in the hospital for a short period for observation. You’re usually required to follow a strict liquid diet for several days or until your bowels start functioning normally.

Typically within the first week, you can gradually start adding thicker liquids and soft foods to your diet. Even though you can return to your daily activities as you feel you are able, it’s important to get plenty of rest throughout the first week or two.

Dr. Garbus can perform many colorectal surgeries using the minimally invasive da Vinci® system, so your recovery is much shorter than a traditional open surgery. Full recovery from colorectal surgery can take up to four to six weeks, depending on how quickly you heal.

How do I prepare for colorectal surgery?

Preparing for colorectal surgery generally requires a bowel prep. Dr. Garbus provides you with a detailed plan you need to follow for at least 24 hours before your colorectal surgery. In general, a bowel prep can involve:

  • Consuming only clear liquid drinks and foods (including broth)
  • Avoiding any drinks or foods with red food coloring
  • Taking liquid or pill laxative medications

Dr. Garbus also counsels you about how to organize things at home to ensure you have everything you need in order to allow for a relaxing and restful recuperation period.
